teaching philosophy

With commitment to practice and regular lessons we believe that anyone is capable of making music at a high level. We teach violin and viola lessons to students of any age, from preschool all the way to Adult students. In our lessons we place an emphasis on learning proper instrument technique. Proper instrument technique should be taught foremost, and will allow students to make a better tone, and learning new music easier.  We believe that teaching and performing go hand and hand, and that they are both equally important. We encourage weekly lessons to get the best progress from our students. If weekly lessons are difficult financially, every other week can be arranged (as long as it is consistent). We expect students to practice their instruments everyday to get the best results. As violin and viola teachers, we place an emphasis on “how to practice.”  We have access and knowledge to essential technique books and exercises for the violin and viola, such as: Suzuki, The Royal Conservatory of Canada and Essential Elements. We also use multiple methods of teaching and a wide variety of music depending on the student’s need.

Chamber Music Experience

Chamber music workshop with two piano students of Scarlette - from Music at 906

Chamber music has been called: “Music with Friends.”

We highly value chamber music. Chamber music is for small groups, usually of 2 - 8 musicians, and no conductor, where each one plays their own part.

Many string programs take the form of orchestra, where there are many students playing the same part. With orchestra, and symphony playing, it is harder to get one-on-one attention. It is also hard for students to learn responsibility because it only takes a few students to carry the group.

As a studio, and chamber musicians ourselves, we focus on chamber music, each student feels that they are making music with each other. Because of the small group nature of chamber music, each student feels good about taking the responsibility of learning their part, and playing music with their peers!

Each month, we hold an optional hour long mini chamber music workshop for our students. 1 intermediate/advanced class and 1 beginner class. The cost to attend the class is $15 per student.

Wsfcs All-County orchestra & Western Regional Orchestra Audition Preparation

For Winston-Salem Forsyth County School (WSFCS) students that are in middle school and high school, we offer audition prep for All County Orchestra, Junior Western Regional Orchestra, and Western Regional Orchestra.

We work with you on how to practice, and how to prepare for a successful audition. Preparing for auditions can be challenging as you want to be ready to perform at your best under nerves and uncomfortable situations.

Regardless of which level you are at, we work with you though the audition music and scales.

***Please note, that for best results in audition prep is for regular lessons. This is because the basis for a successful audition is: technique, technique, technique!

Solid technique is learned through progression through etudes, scales, and solo repertoire. Working through this will give students the tools to becoming proficient at teaching themselves new music, and learning harder music at a faster pace.

While a month of one on one lessons plus practice at home, can go a long way. Learning the technical side will be hard to achieve with just one month of lessons.

There is much more to playing a successful audition than “playing the notes.” The technique and musicality involved is more important, and can make you stand out in the audition.

Congratulations to our students on making it into the WSFCS All-County Orchestra 2024
