Are 2 string Musicians enough???

Short answer: yes, definitely!

We often hear the common misconception that the larger the guest count, the larger the string ensemble needs to be in order to hear: for example, a string quartet for a large guest count, a string trio for a medium guest count, and a string duo for a smaller guest count.

We want you to be be aware that this isn’t true.

For weddings with large guest counts, outside, or/and in a large space, the only thing that can really improve whether you can hear the music properly is proper amplification. This is something we have invested in. We own state-of-the-art DPA (Danish Pro Audio) instrument pickups specifically designed for our instruments.

This is also the case in cocktail hours and receptions when guests are talking. The difference between 2 or 3 or 4 string musicians won’t really make a difference over the extraneous sounds. The Amplification, however will do the trick to get the perfect volume, even with just two musicians.

Here is a little thought experiment:

If you have a large guest count, and your wedding is outdoors -  how do you get your officiant to be heard?

Would you hire 4 officiants to help speak louder, or would you simply mic your 1 and only officiant?

Here are some other things to think about:

  1. Some music actually requires it to be performed softly. Not all music is played at the same volume. Many composers write sections of the music to be played really softly, and some parts loudly. The amplification allows for the soft and quiet parts of the music to still be audible.

  2. During the actual ceremony portion of your wedding, guests will not be talking.

  3. Giving a performance in a concert hall without amplification would be fine with any number of musicians - because both the acoustics of the hall is designed to carry the sound, as well as the fact that the large audience is silent during the performance. When performing during a cocktail hour in a large room, or outside for while guests are chatting and enjoying themselves, the difference between 2, 3, or 4 musicians won’t make much of a difference.

We hope this post has been helpful if you’ve been unsure about hiring us because of our small size. Since starting a few years ago we have played for over 250 weddings and no one has yet given us feedback about not being able to hear us. And we welcome you to read online any reviews left on Google, Facebook, Wedding Wire and The Knot…where no one has said they couldn’t hear us on the day of their special event!
